Note: If you are starting with this lesson and are not using the lessons in order, you must first import the correct libraries archive found in the lesson folder. In the preferences panel under ‘Diagnostics’ click the ‘Import Libraries’ button and choose ‘library-lesson-2-3.phxlib’
1. Create Sheet Colorbar
Step 1 – Open Marks Wizard
Click on the ‘+’ sign in the Marks Panel.
Alternative: Select “New Mark...” from the Libraries Menu.
Step 2 – Select Color Bar in Mark Type list
Step 3 – Select “Smart Mark” under Mark Placement Type to make a rule-based color bar.
Step 4 – Select “Sheet” under Anchor to create a mark based off of Sheet coordinates
Step 5 – Click “Continue”
Step 6 – Select “Choose Inks” under General Settings -> Inks
Step 7 – Under Label Settings, click on the Label checkbox to disable text labels in the bar’s patches
Step 8 – Under Ink Order, click on the Clear button on the right-hand side
Step 9 – Under Ink Order, drag ‘I’ icon into artboard 10 times to add ten ink placeholder patches.
Step 10 – Under Ink Order, click on “Gradation” button to change the patches into gradations
Step 11 – In Gradation Dialog, select Template “40/80/100” and click “Ok” to apply gradation
Step 12 – On Color Bar page click “Continue” twice to get to Set Mark Name and Placement page
Step 13 – Enter “SHEET_CLRBR” in Name/Folder -> Name field
Step 14 – Under Reference Point Selection click on ‘R’ square and drag square into lower-left corner of larger square so bottom left points of both squares match up.
This will cause the mark (‘R’ square) to be positioned in the bottom-left corner of the anchor (larger square).
Alternative: Click on bottom left corners of 3x3 square grids to the right of Anchor and Mark.
Step 15 – Change Y value to “15mm” under Position. This will place the top of the Colorbar 15mm above the bottom edge of the sheet.
Step 16 – Click “Done” to create the new mark
2. Apply Sheet Colorbar
Step 1 – Create new job by clicking on ‘+’ sign in the upper left portion of the Artboard or byselecting “New Job” from the File menu.
Step 2 – Apply B1 Offset Press by dragging the press from the Press panel onto the Artboard.
Step 3 – Scroll to the bottom of the Marks panel and select newly created “SHEET_CLRBR”
Step 4 – Drag Sheet Colorbar mark onto the Artboard to apply. You should see the color bar appear 15 mm from the bottom edge of the sheet.
Alternative: Right click on SHEET_CLRBR and select “Apply to Job”
3. Add Inks to Job
Step 1 – Navigate to Inks Panel and click on icon in upper-left corner and select “Add Inks” fromthe menu
Step 2 – Hold Control key and select the first four inks in the Select inks dialog: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black.
Step 3 – Click “Ok” to add these four inks to the job
Step 4 – Examine SHEET_CLRBR mark again in the job
The mark should now be visible and have CMYK patches in it.
4. Edit Label Settings in Live Sheet Colorbar
Step 1 – Navigate to Items Panel, right click on “SHEET_CLRBR” under Marks and select “Edit Mark”.
Alternative 1: Double-click on “SHEET_CLRBR” in Items Panel
Alternative 2: Double-click on colorbar instance in the Artboard
Step 2 – In Marks Wizard Color Bar page go to Label Settings, click on the Label checkbox to enable text labels, change from “Smart Text” to “Smart + Tint”, and change “Medium” to “Small”
Step 3 – Click “Done” to apply the changes to the live mark.
Note: changes do not affect settings in the original SHEET_CLRBR. Applying SHEET_CLRBR to the job again will use the previous label settings.
Step 4 – Zoom into SHEET_CLRBR in Artboard to verify change using Zoom or Hand tool.
5. Adjust Sheet Colorbar Width and Position in Marks Library
Step 1 - Scroll to the bottom of the Marks panel and double-click on “SHEET_CLRBR” to launchMarks Wizard
Alternative: Right-click on “SHEET_CLRBR” and select “Edit...”
Step 2 – Click “Continue” to get to Color Bar page
Step 3 – In Color Bar Page edit the Length field in General Settings to “anchor.width – 4mm”. This will set the total length of the colorbar dynamically to sheet width minus 4mm.
Step 4 – Click “Continue” twice to get to Set Mark Name and Placement page
Step 5 - Set X position offset to “2mm” in Position section.
This will position the colorbar starting 2mm from the left edge of the sheet leaving 2mm on the right edge of the sheet as well with the change we made in Step 3.
6. Remove Current Sheet Colorbar from Job
Step 1 – Navigate to Items Panel and right-click “SHEET_CLRBR” under Marks section.
Step 2 – Click on “Remove” to remove the mark from the job.
Note: Removing the mark from the Marks section of the Items panel will remove all instances of the smart mark in the job for marks that have more than one placement rule. You can delete individual instances of the mark by removing the mark from Job Items section or by selecting the instance in the Artboard and hitting the Delete key or right-click -> Remove.
7. Re-apply Sheet Colorbar to Job
Step 1 – Scroll to the bottom of the Marks panel and select “SHEET_CLRBR”
Step 2 – Drag Sheet Colorbar mark onto the Artboard to apply.
You should see the color bar appear again 15 mm from the bottom edge of the sheet. This time the colorbar should be 2mm off the left and right edges of the sheet.
